Introduction |

General
Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals (GRINM)
is one of the oldest institutes in the research
and development on rare earth (RE) in China,started
the work in 1958. GRINM has transferred many advanced
rare earth techniques to the companies and factories all
over China. GRINM has made great contributions to
the foundation of rare earth industry in China, several
large rare earth enterprises were built up based on the
techniques developed by GRINM.
In 1995, with the authorization by the State Development
Planning Commission and the loan of $3 million from
the World Bank, National Engineering Research Center
for Rare Earth Materials (CREM) was built up |

based on the Department
of Rare Earth in GRINM. In 1999, the research fields of
CREM were greatly enlarged through the join of the National
Rare Earth Center for Agriculture Development, which was
founded in 1984. In the past 40 years, CREM and the former
Rare Earth Department have successfully accomplished more
than 200 important projects, obtained more than 80 awards
from the State or Ministries, applied 20 patents. CREM
has 80 employees, including: 1 member of the Chinese Academy
of Engineering, 11 professors, 14 senior engineers, 24
engineers and technicians, while 2 employees were postdoctoral
researchers, 3 obtained doctor degrees and 11 obtained
master degrees.
CREM is mainly engaged in the research and development
of rare earth ore decomposition and purification, high purity
rare earth compounds, rare earth metals and alloys, rare earth luminescent materials,
rare earth magnetic materials, rare earth materials for agriculture development
and other functional materials. Two special labs were
set up: the lab of high purity rare earth compounds and the lab
of rare earth metals and functional materials. Five production
lines with certified ISO9001 Quality System Assessment
were built up: rare earth metals and alloys, rare earth magnetic materials,
rare earth luminescent materials, rare earth compounds and rare earth materials
for agriculture development. Most of the products are
exported to Japan, Europe and America.
The mission of CREM is to conduct scientific research,
technical development, hi-tech production and consulting
service for strengthening the competitive position of
China's rare earth materials. CREM hopes to cooperate with different
institutes and companies related with rare earth in various ways,
to form a world famous research and production foundation
of rare earth materials, to fulfill the changing of rare earth productions
to hi-tech advance materials, to obtain economic advantage
from the resource advantage.
